Innovative bridge design for Bishops Stortford
Green Heart Partnership - East Herts District Council
East Herts District Council worked with developer Barratts Homes, architects Chetswood Associates, and artist Alasdair Currie, to create an innovative design for a new footbridge over the river in Bishops Stortford.
The Council’s Section 106 agreement with the developer had included the renovation of the existing footbridge linking a new housing development on the old Goodsyard site to the railway station. Alasdair worked closely with the architects to come up with an innovative new design to replaced the footbridge which responded to the Council’s desire to improve accessibility, improve the links between the new housing development and the public transport infrastructure and support the existing biodiversity which had established itself around the old footbridge.
The quality of the resulting design attracted the attention of Go East, who agreed to contribute £2.2 million pounds to the new development, including £750,000 towards the new bridge.
As a result of the work which has already been achieved by bringing Alasdair on board, East Herts District Council are interested in working with Green Heart and Alasdair further on the Goodsyard development, to ensure quality and integrity of the whole design.
