Showcase design of Stevenage open space
Green Heart Partnershp - Stevenage Borough Council
Through Green Heart Partnership, Stevenage Borough Council is taking a forward-thinking and creative approach to transforming a transitory space into urban pocket park.
Stevenage Borough Council’s Green Heart team worked with artist and landscape architect, Trudi Entwistle, during 2006 to explore the viability of developing a useable, green and visually striking public space within a ‘sunken’ roundabout in the heart of a large business park in Stevenage, where outdoor space for employees is limited.
‘Sunken’ roundabouts are a feature of Stevenage’s innovative new town design, where several cycle ways converge at the road roundabouts creating a ‘sunken’ area that the cycleway uses with the road layout being above.
The artist was commissioned to work with the team to create a concept for the open space which could be used for a number of purposes. The open space was also envisaged as a showcase for sustainable materials, incorporating new models of hard landscaping and environmentally sustainable materials and technologies, and reflecting the innovation of the Gunnels Wood businesses and the legacy of Stevenage as a ‘New Town.’ This space is expected to act as a Pilot for new methods and technologies for the planned redevelopment and expansion of Stevenage.
