Information update April 2009

Hello

Welcome to our Spring 2009 update for arts development officers; we hope you find it useful and informative.

1. Update on NI 11 and Active People data

The last Essential Guide focused on engagement in the arts, particularly the results from the Active People survey and NI11. Here’s an update about the availability of NI11 data for districts and the Active People diagnostic tool.

District level data for NI11 has not been usable up to this point as the 250 sample per district is too small. By June 2009, once a full year’s data has been collated and weighted by IPSOS MORI, DCMS have paid for us to have additional reports for districts

Sport England and DCMS have agreed to let us use the Active People diagnostic. This online tool is relatively user friendly. The first tier of data is presented as a series of readymade reports, broken down by basic demographics. Arts Council has also bought into the main diagnostic tool for Active People, which allows users to select their own queries. The district level data will be added in to the diagnostic. Given the small sample users should keep in mind that there are small confidence intervals (so very specific searches will be of limited robustness).

Artists taking the lead

Artists of all kinds from across the UK are being challenged to use the nation as a blank canvas for twelve inspirational commissions that will showcase our creativity to the world, as part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

12 commissions of up to £500,000 will be awarded to create 12 new works of art across the country; one in each of the nine English regions, and in the nations of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The project provides artists across the country with an unparalleled opportunity to create work that celebrates the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and reflects the rich cultural diversity of the UK.

From 19 March, until Friday 29 May 2009, artists can submit their ideas for the commissions online at www.artiststakingthelead.org.uk
